The procedure in which the shape and form of the nose gets changed is called Rhinoplasty or Nose job. Through rhinoplasty surgery, the surgeon can change the shape of the bone, skin, and cartilage.   Nose job or Rhinoplasty is not just for beauty, medical reasons namely birth defects and breathing problems can be the reason for undergoing the Rhinoplasty surgery.   Iran is one of the top 5 countries in cosmetic surgery in the world and since rhinoplasty or nose job is the most common surgery in Iran (about 80,000 times annually), doctors are quite expert in this field and can offer different shapes and types to you to choose from. You need to inform your doctor what you have in mind and even bring a picture of the people with that kind of nose to give your doctor the clear idea of what you want. During your sessions, your doctor will ask about your medical history to have all the necessary information about your body. Then your doctor will conduct a comprehensive physical examination including lab test and an exam of inside and outside of your nose for the impact of surgery on your breathing. The effect of your facial features like your skin thickness and the strength of the cartilage at the end of your nose can have an undeniable effect on the result of the surgery. The doctor will take some photos of your nose to use them to give you a demonstration of what your nose will be like and use it as a reference during the surgery.   During the Surgery   For Rhinoplasty surgery local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia is used and the kind and amount of anesthesia depends on your unique case and your doctor`s decision. Rhinoplasty surgery can be done through an external cut at the base of your nose between your nostrils or inside your nose so that your surgeon will readjust the bone and cartilage underneath your skin. At the end of the surgery, tampons will be placed inside your nose and there will be cast and splints on your nose for your nose to maintain the new form.     After the Surgery   Right after the surgery you need someone to drive you home. Do not use medications that can increase bleeding, medications like Aspirin or Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB) for 2 weeks after and before the surgery. If you are a smoker, you need to stop smoking since smoking can make the healing process slow and may cause infection. You need to bed rest after the surgery for 3 days until the tampons get removed then it takes about 1 week until the cast gets removed by your doctor. When sleeping, your head position needs to be higher than your chest so that the bleeding and swelling reduces. After the dressings inside of your nose get removed, it is common to have some bleeding and drainage of mucus for a few days post-surgery. Instead of shower you need to take baths when you have bandages on your nose. You must not do strenuous activities like jogging and aerobics. Do not blow your nose. When brushing your teeth be careful and gentle so that your upper lip doesn`t move much. You mustn`t smile or laugh. Try to eat high-fiber food so that you don`t experience constipation. Do not use sunglasses or glasses for at least 4 weeks after the surgery. Instead use contact lenses or tape your glasses to your forehead until your nose gets better. The discoloration and swelling of the eyelids are temporary and can heal in a couple of weeks but the swelling of the nose can take about 1 year to heal completely. Do not put any ice or cold packs on your nose after the surgery but you must put sunscreen with SPF 30 on your nose to prevent any permanent skin discoloration.
